SCI for AI Fundamentals
Learn how to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of AI systems using the Software Carbon Intensity methodology, extended for the unique characteristics of AI.
About
Most carbon metrics tell you how bad things are. The SCI was designed to tell you what to do about it. This course introduces the Software Carbon Intensity for AI specification: what it measures, why it's built the way it is, and how to apply it to the AI systems you build and operate.
The course covers the philosophy behind the SCI, the core equation and its components, the Provider and Consumer persona model, and practical guidance for measurement and disclosure across the AI lifecycle.
Outcomes
- Explain why traditional carbon metrics fail to drive action in software teams
- Calculate SCI scores using the core equation and its components
- Distinguish between Provider and Consumer responsibilities in AI systems
- Select appropriate functional units for their AI measurement needs
- Design measurement strategies that align accountability with agency
- Make informed decisions about measurement approaches based on available data
